Electrical Safety

Electrical work can expose workers to serious hazards. Understanding electrical safety is one of the first skills an electrician must develop.

Before working on an electrical circuit, identify the electrical source, determine the hazards, and follow the appropriate safety procedures.

Electrical Shock
Electrical shock occurs when current passes through the body. The severity depends on factors such as current, path through the body, and duration of contact.
Arc Flash
An arc flash can release intense heat, light, pressure, and molten material. Proper procedures and protective equipment help reduce exposure.
PPE
Personal protective equipment is selected based on the hazards associated with the electrical work being performed.
De-Energizing
When required, equipment should be de-energized and the absence of voltage verified before work begins.
What should you do before beginning electrical work on a circuit?
Identify the electrical source and hazards, follow the required safety procedures, and verify that the circuit is in the appropriate safe condition before beginning work.
